Book Preview

Yesterday Sandra Morris shared her beautiful artwork 
for her new book about trees with our group. 

She also showed us pages with insects and birds that live or feed off the different trees. It was also very interesting to learn about some of the ways Maori used the trees for making tools or waka.

The children told Sandra about our play 'Rata and the Totara Tree' and she is very keen to come back to see us perform it next term.

Sandra is launching her new book at Cornwall Park Information Centre on Saturday 4 July at 2:00 p.m. She would love to involve our group and so I thought we could sing some waiata and take along some artwork to share.

Taku Tāmaki

I highly recommend a whānau visit to the top-notch Auckland Museum to see the amazing Taku Tāmaki exhibition. You will not be disappointed - big words but I truly believe it's AWESOME!!!!

Visiting Auckland Museum

Firstly I would like to thank the wonderful support crew I had for our awesome trip to the museum yesterday. A special thank you for all the boosters seats!

We started the day with a good morning tea as we had a very busy itinerary planned for us thanks to Johnny, John and Hikitia.

Session One:Entomology

We were very fortunate to have John Early head curator of the entomology department talk and answer questions about entomology. I have a new found respect for parasites and insects. I liked John's whakatauki 'Ahakoa he iti he pounamu' I thought that it was very apt!

Jane Kaa and I have known John for a while because we taught his daughter Genevieve many years ago.

Session Two:Weird and Wonderful Challenge

Johnny and his team set the children a quiz and they had to locate certain insects around the gallery. The children broke up into teams and scoured Weird and Wonderful looking for answers. The children loved the chance to explore and use the cool equipment on offer around the gallery.

Session Three: Restoration of Hotunui Meeting House

We headed to the Maori Gallery of the museum to find out about the restoration of Hotunui meeting house. It was fantastic having time with the people restoring the meeting house and learning its whakapapa.  

Overall a fantastic museum trip with lots of amazing and interesting things presented to the children to learn about. The children,parents and teacher aides were terrific with the sharing of their ideas and questions at each session.

I was particularly pleased and proud of the children showing their leadership skills especially with the way they helped others and their wonderful words when giving thank you speeches to the different people that worked with us.

I really look forward to more opportunities to work with the Auckland museum as they have been amazing with their thoughtfulness and thorough planning of each session we have had with them.
